The medical staff at the Kozmary center for pain management works with referring physicians to effectively manage the patient’s pain
At the Kozmary center for pain management, patients find leading edge treatments and technologies delivered personally by our board certified director, Steven V. Kozmary. He is dedicated to helping patients relieve their pain, regain function and get back their lives.
The power of new technologies and treatment
Among the more advance treatment options are spinal cord stimulation, intraspinal drug infusion and radiofrequency nerve lesioning. Radio frequency nerve lesioning is the promising result of a search for a non surgical technique capable of stopping pain at its source. We have used this technique successfully with many patients with sever, unresolved chronic pain. Both spinal cord stimulation and intraspinal drug infusion are implantable therapies.
SCS relives chronic pain by modulating the afferent signals in the dorsal column of the spinal cord. A pulse generator is implanted with a small wire to deliver electrical impulses. The low voltage stimulation, produced by a special device, seems to close a gate in the spinal cord, effectively preventing transmission of pain signals to the brain.
Intraspinal implantable pumps internally administer pain medication into the spinal column. A drug pump is implanted with a small diameter tube to precisely deliver controlled doses of medication. This often reduces the side effects associated with oral drug administration.
The ideal patient for an implantable treatment is one how has not responded well to more conservatives therapies but how experiences significant pain relief in SCS or intraspinal drug infusion tests. SCS is often used with patients who have never damage and or continued pain following back surgery. Intraspinal drug infusion is used for patients with severe side effects to oral pain medications or for cancer pain. Because both devices are externally programmed, re-adjustment is easy and noninvasive.
