Back pain is one of the most common and most costly ailments in our society. In face, the cost of treating back problems, time lost from work, insurance, therapy and surgery is nearly 90 billion annually.

Common Causes

Back and neck pain can result form a variety of conditions, because even minor damage to any one component of the spine can make movement painful. Back pain can occur for no apparent reason and at any point in the spine, the most common site, however, is the lower back, because it bears the majority of the body’s weight. Injury to the back can cause patterns of pain response that produce pain in the neck, shoulders and extremities. Common causes include:

  • Carrying
  • Lifting
  • Twisting and bending performed improperly
  • Muscle strains and sprains
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Intervertebra disc problems
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Lack of muscle tone and excess weight
  • Poor posture
  • Lifestyle factors as such as lack of exercise
  • Stress and smoking
  • Injuries from work, sports auto accidents and leisure activities

The Power of a Thorough Evaluation

At the Kozmary Center for Pain Management, our mission is to accurately identify, correct and alleviate musculoskeletal or neurological dysfunction. The first step in back and neck evaluation is to thoroughly assess the patients to ensure that treatment is effective, accurate, evidence based, reliable and appropriate for the patients conditions. This includes a thorough evaluation of the lumbar, cervical and or thoracic spine.

Evaluation typically includes a patient’s history, objective measurements and specific test to establish the patient’s level of pain in order to develop an effective, individualized treatment plan. We check for interverebra disc problems, face syndrome, spondylolisthesis, nerve compression, unequal leg length, muscle spam and other conditions that can be casual factors in back and neck pain.

We use many advance treatments including:

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks
  • Spinal cord stimulation
  • Bio feedback
  • Transutanenous electrical never stimulation (TENS)
  • Intraspinal drug infusion
  • Radiofrequency nerve lesioning
